Technique & Perception
I do not treat contemporary technique as an end in itself, but as the foundation for perceiving one's own body, expanding movement possibilities, making decisions, and acting with growing artistic independence.

Choreography, interdisciplinary performance, and inclusive dance are not separate fields for Fang-Yu Shen, but expressions of one practice. At its center is a single question—how bodies are seen, shaped, and understood, and how dance can connect different experiences and forms of perception.
Fang-Yu Shen's practice brings together choreographic creation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and inclusive approaches to movement. Rather than treating dance as a fixed technique, she understands it as a way of perceiving and articulating the body—one accessible to people of different backgrounds and abilities. She is interested in how bodies are seen, shaped, and understood in different contexts, and how dance can create connections across experiences, disciplines, and forms of perception.

Fang-Yu Shen is a Taiwan-born, Germany-based choreographer and dance artist whose work unfolds across theatre, music, and site-responsive performance contexts.
She received her formal dance training in Taiwan before continuing her studies at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, where she developed a distinct choreographic language that bridges Eastern sensibilities with the physical and individual-oriented approach of the Folkwang tradition. She graduated with a Master's degree in Choreography in 2011.
Her early works were recognized in several international choreography competitions, and she was invited to work as an in-house choreographer with Scapino Ballet Rotterdam. During this period, she created stage works that combined precise physicality with a subtle sense of humor, including Rotkammertraum, inspired by the classical Chinese novel "Dream of the Red Chamber."
In recent years, Shen has expanded her practice beyond traditional theatre settings. She has collaborated with the Düsseldorf-based underground rock band Amour Vache, developing performances that integrate live music and choreographic structures. She has also worked with Romanian artist Alexandra Pirici in the context of museums and festivals, engaging in performative formats that question the boundaries between choreography, presence, and visual art.
Alongside her artistic work, Shen has developed a long-term engagement with dance education in diverse social contexts, including work with children and people with disabilities. This experience has deeply influenced her artistic perspective. Rather than approaching dance as a fixed technique, she understands it as a way of perceiving and articulating the body—one that can be accessed by individuals with different backgrounds and abilities.
For Fang-Yu Shen, choreography, interdisciplinary performance, and inclusive dance are not separate departments but different expressions of one artistic practice. All three draw on the same curiosity about how the body perceives, articulates, and connects.

Contemporary Dance Practice in the Bachelor's Programme in Dance
My teaching connects artistic practice, pedagogical responsibility, and continuous reflection, drawing on long-standing experience in professional dance, choreography, and dance education.
Technique
expands physical possibilities.
Perception
creates awareness of one's own body and surroundings.
Decision
emerges from perception.
Independence
develops from repeated decisions of one's own.
My teaching rests on four connected terms. I do not hand over ready-made solutions: I set a clear framework, ask questions, give precise feedback, and guide students towards responsibility for their own artistic development.

I do not treat contemporary technique as an end in itself, but as the foundation for perceiving one's own body, expanding movement possibilities, making decisions, and acting with growing artistic independence.
Working with clear frameworks and open tasks, students generate their own material and learn to select, transform, and structure it into choreographic decisions — knowing that artistic processes are rarely linear.
I guide dancers individually — shaped by long-term work with an inclusive ensemble and with professional companies such as Scapino Ballet Rotterdam and the Folkwang Tanzstudio — so they experience how collaborative rehearsal processes really work.
Conversation, observation, and feedback turn mistakes into part of an artistic research process, preparing students for the varied realities of professional dance.
Alongside her work as a choreographer and performer, Fang-Yu Shen understands teaching as a practice that connects contemporary dance technique, body awareness, improvisation, and choreographic thinking. Her aim is to support dancers in developing technical precision, presence, curiosity, decision-making, and an independent artistic voice.
